Tower Rock Natural Area

Driving Directions

From Altenburg, take Route A east, then County Road 460 and follow this road south to the area.


This forest tract on the Mississippi River contains a geologic formation known as Tower Rock. The Tower Rock Natural Area comprises about 32 acres of upland oak and other mixed hardwoods. Most of the Natural Area is on the Missouri bank of the Mississippi River. The Rock itself is separated from the rest of the area by the river and is accessible by boat.

  • Rock Climbing, rappelling are not allowed.
  • Road access is difficult when Chester gauge is 32.5' and Cape gauge is 37.5'. When Chester is at 1.5' and Cape at 7.2', you can walk to Tower Rock.
