Driving Directions

Located in Kansas City southwest of Emanuel Cleaver Boulevard and Troost Avenue. From I-70, take Van Brunt south. It will turn into Emanuel Cleaver Boulevard/47th Street as it bends to the west. Continue west, passing under Highway 71, then turn south on Troost Avenue to the area.

Highlights

Just a 10-minute walk from the Plaza shopping area, the Discovery Center is a unique, hands-on, urban conservation education center located on eight acres in the heart of Kansas City.

Demonstrations  Butterfly garden, bird feeding garden, and Grow Native demonstrations including prairie wildflowers, wetland, water garden, and manicured upland and lowland forests.  
Highlighted Activities  The Discovery Center offers a variety of hands-on learning experiences and workshops. There are also tours of the building and grounds showing environmentally friendly ways to build an urban environment in harmony with nature. 
Hiking  The Discovery Center has a 0.25 mile disabled accessible winding Wild Sidewalk that takes visitors through the Grow Native Gardens on the site; the East-West sidewalk connects with a number of Brush Creek Parkway sidewalks that meander up the Creek toward Kauffman Memorial Gardens and the Country Club Plaza. These two to three miles of walkways also connect with Volker Park, Theiss Park and the Nelson Atkins Museum of Art, and the Trolley Car Trail which runs north and south along Brookside.
