Preferred Habitat Occurs in sloughs, oxbows, ditches, swamps, marshes, backwaters and pools of permanent streams with clear to moderately turbid water, mud bottoms with organic debris, little or no current and dense aquatic vegetation.
Distribution Is the most common madtom in the Mississippi lowlands, also occurs in a broad zone from Spring R. in southwest Missouri to the Mississippi R. tributaries in northeast Missouri *001*.
