Preferred Habitat Occurs in streams, oxbows, sloughs and ditches with low to moderate gradient. Tolerates a wide range of turbidities and bottom types. Occurs in reservoirs in other states.
Distribution Common in large streams and ditches of prairie and lowland regions, and in the Missouri and Mississippi rivers. Abundance increased dramatically from 1940's-1980's. distribution may be limited by competition from related rosyface shiner *001*.
